Verb [Proto-Italic]

Etymology: According to De Vaan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ork-éye-ti, a causative of *h₂erk- (“to protect, guard”). To explain the vocalism, De Vaan suggests a generalized root *ark- as opposed to *ork-. The LIV, however, proposes a possible zero-grade pre-form *h₂r̥k-éye-ti. Schrijver alternatively suggests a possible derivation of Latin arceō from a stative formation *h₂r̥k-eh₁-yeti (“to be in the state of closing off”), though he still considers this explanation unsatisfactory and also proposes that it is a denominative e-grade causative, comparing augeō (“to increase”) and mereō (“to deserve”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *fargijaną (“to push down”). "etymology_text": "According to De Vaan, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ork-éye-ti, a causative of *h₂erk- (“to protect, guard”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *fargijaną (“to push down”).",
